LOOP THORUGH: A CONVERSATION WITH GARY HILL

06.06.2024

The cross-disciplinary conceptual artist Gary Hill has titled the exhibition Loop Through, referring to an exhibition structured in three phases: the first began with the inaugural talk that took place on 6 June, in which the artist provided insights into the “behind the scenes” of some of his works. The exhibition continued on 21 June with an installation and a live performance, and the series will conclude on September 20.

The artist has tagged the exhibition Loop Through in reference to a singular work (Two-channel video installation, 2005) and also as a suggestion of a circuit where the viewers can experience the selected pieces. The works featured in Loop Through, range from silent projections of “beingness” and confrontations with physicality, to ambiguities between inside and outside. The installations have been strategically places to reflect all the industrial spaces that constitute the heart of the Art & Design District Palma.

Under the glow of the setting sun, Art & Design District hosted the inaugural session of Loop Through by the renowned artist Gary Hill. This highly anticipated event featured a speech by Hill, where he delved into a curated selection of his works spanning over five decades. From his pioneering works from the early 70s with video, sound and language to his intricate intermedia installations, Hill has persistently pushed the boundaries of perception, creating artworks that resonate on multiple sensory and conceptual levels.

The District provided a meeting space to understand the process behind his works and trajectory of the artist through an engaging forum-like encounter with Hill. During the evening, several works such as Around & About, 1980’, Inasmuch As It Is Always Already Taking Place, 1990, Withershins, 1995, and Language Willing, 2002 were unveiled and analyzed by its own creator, Gary Hill.
